Choosing Your First Basic Hand Tools

The ability to fix things isn’t always something you are born with. Let’s face it, things break, and if you can’t fix it, you may have to pay someone to repair it for you. Even worse, many people simply toss things away rather than even attempt a basic fix. Anyone can learn to do at least simple repairs using just a few readily available and affordable hand tools. The tools below are a good example of what you should have both in your car and home. If money is tight, you can store a few important tools in your trunk and still have them available if you need them at home.

The first tool I recommend isn’t really a tool, and that is the tool box itself. Choose between a hard-sided box and a soft-sided one, depending on your budget, your needs, and your preference. Next, choose name brand tools like Crescent, DeWalt, Ridgid, Irwin and other better brands. Buying a cheap tool only pays when you only need it one time, or you don’t care if it gets destroyed. I suggest a couple of quality adjustable wrenches and a screwdriver set to start, along with a claw hammer and a set of pliers including diagonal cutters, water pump, lineman’s, and needle nose pliers. Top it off with a flashlight, some duct and electrical tape and you have a good start. As your budget allows, you should pick up some combination wrenches as needed, or look for a sale on a quality set of SAE for English nuts and bolts, or Metric for foreign appliances and cars.
